Georgian Folk and Music
Georgia has rich and still vibrant traditional music, which is primarily known as arguably the earliest polyphonic tradition. Georgian folk music is predominantly vocal and is widely known for its rich traditions of vocal polyphony. Everywhere in the World, Georgians are considered as masters of polyphonic music.
The oldest tradition of Georgian handicraft corresponding with pre-Christian culture became nowadays popular, attracting the scientists and ethnologists. The Georgian ceramics, often used in traditional fiestas are distinguished with its quality and variety of motifs; original style of carving wood, rich ornamental jewelry, unique enamel, variation of handmade textile and felt production, still so much required in the mountains, all these traditional handicraft has been successfully continued by Georgian artists, passing the knowledge from generation to generation.
Georgian theatre has a long history; its oldest national form was the "Sakhioba" (extant from the 3rd century BC to the 17th century AD). The Georgian National Theatre was founded in 1791 in Tbilisi, In the twentieth and twenty firs centuries Georgian theaters achieved international success. The Tbilisi-based Rustaveli Theater has been acclaimed internationally for its performances (in Georgian) of the works of William Shakespeare and German dramatist Bertolt Brecht. Georgia has a big history of theatrical tradition and huge source of theatrical memorabilia. Nowadays there are about 20 theaters functioning in Tbilisi. Many of them are well recognized in European countries.
Georgia is one of the oldest wine regions in the world with the richest wine making traditions. Wine making traditions are the significant part of Georgian soul and culture. The history of wine production in Georgia counts more than 8,000 years. There are grown more that 400 various species of grape in Georgia.
In Georgia, the food is quite appropriately an expression of the culture. The Georgian cuisine is specific to the country, but also contains some influences from the European culinary traditions. The cuisine offers a variety of dishes with various herbs and spices. Each historical province of Georgia has its own distinct culinary tradition. Feature of the Georgian cuisine is the use of certain products distributed in the Caucasus, and therefore the presence of certain foods, the popularity of which has worldwide fame.
