Georgian theatre has a long history; its oldest national form was the "Sakhioba" (extant from the 3rd century BC to the 17th century AD). The Georgian National Theatre was founded in 1791 in Tbilisi, In the twentieth and twenty firs centuries Georgian theaters achieved international success. The Tbilisi-based Rustaveli Theater has been acclaimed internationally for its performances (in Georgian) of the works of William Shakespeare and German dramatist Bertolt Brecht. Georgia has a big history of theatrical tradition and huge source of theatrical memorabilia. Nowadays there are about 20 theaters functioning in Tbilisi. Many of them are well recognized in European countries.
